Engineering Design

Our team of engineers have vastly different backgrounds, experience and specialities, helping turn any concept you may have into a reality. With access to physical testing (click here to read more) and capacity to use both SolidWorks and Inventor for 3D modelling and finite element analysis (FEA), we can ensure that by the end of the process your design is ready to use. Our capabilities extend to having the design approved through a governing body such as the ROVER portal (more information here) or certified through use of a modification plate in some applications.

The design mantra of BTT Engineering is to use a collaborative process which takes into account our client's needs while ensuring a compliant outcome which considers social and environmental impacts. We actively keep our clients involved in the design process from start to finish to always stay with our client's expectations of the design and inform of any required changes - sometimes compromises are required to be made on designs between mass, rating, function and manufacturability and we want our clients to be able to understand the potential impact of a change and make an informed decision as to what is most appropriate for them.

Through our 2D and 3D modelling capabilities we can produce a detailed model of your proposed design, with the option of generating manufacturing drawings to put your design into production. We can get involved in any stage of the design process, such as developing a prototype from some base specifications, inspecting and modelling an already built prototype for evaluation and taking an already existing 3D model and altering the design as necessary.

One project we have been involved in is the design of a custom light trailer fleet to a client's requirements. The client came to us with a number of issues with their existing items, such as poor weight distribution, excessive and costly maintenance requirements, issues with the fleet performing its intended function and a lack of structural integrity. Through an extensive design process we were able to alleviate the above issues and produce a design which was suitable for the client's current needs but adaptable to perform different functions if required in the future. Manufacturing drawings were generated for this design and once built the prototype was assessed on site to confirm it would function as intended.

Another example of an engineering design completed is a custom towbar to suit a client's vehicle fleet. The client had reported several issues they had with commercially manufactured towbars in suiting their application, therefore a design which could mitigate these issues while being economical to produce was required to be developed. Alongside the customer, a solution was proposed which underwent preliminary FEA for static and dynamic load resistance before a prototype was built and tested via our test facility. The client was presented with a detailed design report detailing design explanations and all testing completed along with manufacturing drawings, meaning that the towbars could be constructed and fitted immediately upon conclusion of the project.

Not all engineering designs we complete are for fleet applications, with specialised one-off designs also within our capability. We have been engaged for custom heavy trailer designs for a number of applications, such as machinery cartage and boat carrying. A client engaged us recently requiring a heavy trailer design to be tailored for their new boat which was under construction. We were able to take the client's initial specifications, adapt these to a compliant design which was easily capable of being manufactured and attain approval for the design to be used without restriction on the road.

Our team has also been involved in the design and validation in a number of other areas, such as:

  • Load restraint certification

  • Lifting points on equipment

  • Utility racking

  • Vehicle access steps

  • Pusher bars

  • Mobile offices and screens
