Heavy Trailer ROVER Compliance - A Specialty of BTT
The team at BTT Engineering have been hard at work during the start of 2024 and have recently completed an exciting ROVER project for our client, Australian Growing Solutions, which involved getting approval to bring in a specialised semi trailer into Australia from Europe to support their operations in processing their GrowFibre sustainable wood fibre substrate.
The team at Australian Growing Solutions made contact as an initial enquiry with BTT Engineering just before Christmas in 2023 and once the festive period was over the project was formally commenced late in January. The primary production and heavy vehicle industry is one that is constantly putting time pressures on all businesses involved and this one was no exception - the client had been given notice from the manufacturer in Europe that shipping was to commence within a month of the project starting! This meant that we needed to ensure clear and timely communication was maintained with our client as tight deadlines can be stressful for everyone.
This project contained a number of technical aspects which utilised a number of sectors of BTT’s expertise. To allow for the unit to be brought into Australia a concessional RAV entry (CRE) was required to be submitted through ROVER. As part of this, the team was required to liaise extensively with the overseas manufacturer to attain the required evidence to support the application. BTT worked with the overseas manufacturer to determine which regulations could be applied in Australia through mutual recognition to the Australian Design Rules (ADRs) and complete further investigation as to any additional requirements that would be imposed on the trailer through ADRs that are unique to Australia.
As part of gathering the evidence, 3D trailer models were required to be provided for analysis and reporting, a particular strength of our team which has significant expertise in 3D CAD and FEA simulations. It was also identified that certain elements of the trailer meant that it may have been difficult to register in Australia - thankfully our road access expert Paul was able to quickly identify available options which would allow the approval to proceed through his knowledge of NHVR notices and gazettes.
To ensure that the client was not held up with a unit sitting in customs without permission to unload, the decision was made to complete the import process first and then move on to getting full approval once importation was confirmed. The first approval was processed weeks before the shipment was due to arrive in Australia and shortly afterwards the full approval was submitted, with the final approval being processed and approved within 3 months of project request. BTT is really proud of being able to attain this result for our client considering the amount of time required to process a technical job such as this and the fact that 2 ROVER assessment wait times were served within that time frame.
BTT Engineering really enjoyed being involved in this project and love the work that the team at Australian Growing Solutions are doing in working towards a more sustainable future through their GrowFibre product, which can be seen on their website here. This project aligns with BTT Engineering’s values of sustainability which is headlined by our ISO14001 certification, having just been renewed for another three years after passing our required audits.
To find out more about how BTT can assist with any number of the facets listed from this project, such as road access, ADR knowledge, engineering computer modelling and simulation and processing an approval through the ROVER portal, please give our team a call today and we can work out the best solution for you.
