Vehicle Standards Bulletin 6 (VSB6) Version 3.2 - Coming Into Force Soon

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has released an update to Vehicle Standards Bulletin (VSB) 6 under version 3.2, with the update live from July 1. A number of updates across modification codes are administrative, such as acknowledging the RAV within the information text of a code, however one big change which is sure to shake up industry is the introduction of a modification code specifically covering tipper body design, J4. This code affects all states and territories operating under VSB6. BTT Engineering are industry leaders in the commercial vehicle industry and as such have provided comment and consultation on the application of the code with the relevant regulatory bodies over previous years.

Modification Code J4 —Tipper Bodies (Design) introduces a number of requirements and recommendations for a tipper body’s construction, with more directives regarding stability and hydraulics amongst others a feature of the new modification code. Once a J4 Design certification has been provided, this can be re-used on other comparable designs provided that the J4 Certification considers a worst-case scenario.

The new modification code was announced in April 2023 which has left many modifiers scrambling to ensure they are ready to comply with the new requirements by the start of July. The NHVR has been providing modifiers a three month extension on application, providing that the tipper continues to meet the J1 requirements of VSB6 v3.1 and that all modifications and certifications covered by the extension are completed by September 30, 2023. This extension will give modifiers and certifiers much needed additional time to get their designs certified and operational for the J4 code.

As the RVSA transitional period comes to a close BTT Engineering are investing effort into devising resources such as drawings and design templates for manufacturers looking to get up to speed with the J4 code. Our aim is to make the transition into the new code as smooth as possible for industry. Keep watch for developments in this space over the next month as we announce our plans and services we intend on offering surrounding J4 certification.
